Jukebox’s ancestor the Phonograph (also called the gramophone) was invented in 1877 by none other than Thomas Alva Edison. This Phonograph was coin operated but was made from a wax cylinder. It was another 12 years before a man installed this in his “saloon” and called it “Nickel in a slot”. The interested fact is that that name was later shortened to “nickelodeon”. In 1906 this nickelodeon was replaced by a newer invention which had various collections of songs. By now it was called the “Automatic Entertainer”

It was in 1927 that amplifiers were added to the automated entertainer. Though it was very popular at this time but then the sales dipped rapidly during the World War II and the great depression. Once this period was over, the steepletone jukebox became something of a craze. The manufacturing companies first tried to make them in the likeness of a radio but eventually came out with innovative graphical interfaces. The jukebox has now come to the world of internet and is ruling the roost here too. One of the most highly regarded brands on the market for jukeboxes is steepletone.
